God Provides – A Year in Retrospect

GOD PROVIDES.  These are the words that came to my mind on New Year’s Eve as I thought back over 2018. My husband and I had been blessed with God’s provision time and time again during the past twelve months.  Of God’s several characteristics, Jehovah Jireh – God Provides, was the one that wrapped our year from beginning to end. I’d like to share just a few of the ways God provided for us this past year :

Ben’s health. Ben underwent three successful surgeries over the course of seven months bringing him to a state of health that he has not experienced in many years.  With a new kidney and the removal of three of his parathyroids, Ben’s energy level has increased to the level it was before his kidney problems became so severe. To hear him tell others this past month” I feel like a million bucks” brings joy to my heart.

My job. I am blessed to work for a company which allowed me to take the time I needed to be with Ben during his surgeries and recovery time. From my supervisor to my co-workers, to the owner of the company, to my customers – all pitched in and were supportive of us during my absences. Many lifted us in prayer and provided words of encouragement during this journey.

Our finances. God’s financial provision was and still is amazing. Not only did I miss a number of work days (some for which I did not get paid), but Ben wasn’t able to work much either due to his recovery time. Despite the lost income from work, we’ve been able to stay current on our bills, pay a large debt owed the end of October, and even provided Christmas presents for our family. Many times we had to think outside the box, but as I think of the creative ways God provided financially for us, I am more convinced of His never-ending love.

Christmas with my family.  This year we were blessed to spend Christmas with our entire family. We had to celebrate in increments but managed to celebrate with all of them. Ending the year celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ with my parents who are in their 80’s and all our children and their families was the icing on the cake.

As I basked in the glow of the twinkling Christmas lights enjoying the peacefulness of our quiet home on New Year’s Eve, these were the memories that flooded my mind. Yes, God did provide. Yes, He blessed us beyond what we could ever imagine. Yes, He showered us with His love over and over again. And Yes, I will start the new year having fallen more deeply in love with my Heavenly Father. My Abba who provides.

“And Abraham called the name of that place Jehovah-jireh: as it is said to this day, In the mount of Jehovah it shall be provided.”  (Genesis 22:14, ASV)

Prayer:  Dear Abba, As we begin a new year, let us remember how much You love us and how You provide for us. In Jesus’ name, we pray, Amen.

  1. How edified I was reading your 2018 journey in which God’s provision shone so clearly. I praise Him for what He is doing in your lives. He guided us through 2018 as well, providing above all health and strength and family support as I broke my ankle, my husband had cataracts removed, and my mom had a stroke. Her recovery is amazing, even though it’s changed our lives. He also saw us through the loss of three family members with cancer. God is so incredibly good. We welcomed a grandchild into the family, expanded our foster grand- family by six for several months, and launched our eldest grand off to college. A truly good year. Amid all that I was able to complete another work of fiction, God’s Love Most Faithful. God continue to bless you Sheryl.

    1. Thank you, Mary. It sounds like your 2018 was busy but also filled with blessings. Health is such a big part of our lives not only for us but for our loved ones, too. It is such a blessing to see how God works in, around, and through all these circumstances. That we take a moment to reflect on His provision blesses us even more. Congratulations on your new book. Let me know where I can get a copy. 🙂 Thanks for checking in and sharing your thoughts. I loved hearing the many blessings you received. God is so good.
