Come Little Leaves – Revisited

WHEN AUTUMN ARRIVES with the vibrant colors of changing leaves, my mind drifts back to my childhood.  I imagine myself sitting in my grandmother’s lap listening to her sing Come, Little Leaves – one of my favorite songs.

“Come, little leaves,” said the wind one day,

“Come over the meadow with me and play;

Put on your dresses of red and gold,

For summer is gone and the days grow cold.”

My grandmother’s arms cradle me.  I relax and breathe in deep. The fragrance of her lightly scented body powder fills my senses.

A smile emerges and spreads across my face as I remember her.  Comfort and peace envelope me as I linger in the past.  A pleasant memory.  One I don’t want to fade away.

I am grateful to God for blessing me with such memories.  I was very fortunate to have a grandmother who loved and coddled me.  I didn’t see her often; but when I did, she made the time I spent with her special.  Those memories are etched in the walls of my heart forever.

The gentleness of my grandmother, and the memories I hold of her, remind me of my loving Father in Heaven.  He, too, coddles and loves me.  He makes me feel special; like no one else is around.

Memories.  So special.  So blessed.  So grateful.  I can’t help but give praise, honor and glory to my Heavenly Father.  For He alone is worthy to be praised.  His love for me never ends.

“He will take great delight in you, He will quiet you with his love, He will rejoice over you with singing.”  (Zephaniah 3:17, NIV)

Prayer:  Dear Heavenly Father, As John wrote in Revelation 4:11, “You are worthy, our Lord and God, to receive glory and honor and power, for You created all things (including grandmothers) and by Your will they were created and have their being.”  It is in Your son Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
