Schedule a Pity Party

Have you ever had one?

I shared with my friend recently that I threw myself a pity party on the way to work one morning. It was a Tuesday morning after the Memorial Day weekend. You know, one of those three day weekends where everyone else seems to be at the lake, on the beach, or out doing something fun, but you spend the entire weekend at home catching up on projects. Well, you got it. That was me, and come Tuesday morning, I was wallowing in the mire of my pity.

I cried out to God it wasn’t fair that others got to enjoy the weekend while I stayed at home to mow, clean house, and do laundry. I shook my fist, I shed a few tears, and spoke my heart.

Immediately, I felt better. I turned my woes from pity to thankfulness. I began thanking God for the many gifts He has given me such as:  a house that needs to be cleaned, with a yard that needs to be mowed. I have been blessed with so much. I felt silly for being in such despair a few seconds earlier.

After sharing the pity party incident with my friend, she laughed. She told me she used to schedule herself a pity party weekly. She’d choose a day and time, then write it on her calendar. When the appointed time came for her pity party, she would go to a secluded spot – her alone spot. But instead of engaging in the pity party as she anticipated, she often found herself laughing at the absurdity of it. Most of the time, her pity party never occurred.

What I’ve learned from this experience is whether we laugh our way out of a pity party, or actually have a full blown tantrum, our God is here to listen. He wants to know our hearts. He cares about our troubles. He longs to hear our frustrations. He covets the time we spend casting our woes to His listening ears. God loves us so much.

So the next time you feel like having a pity party, schedule one. Mark it on your calendar and when the time comes, go to your secluded spot. If you find yourself laughing at the sillyness of it, use the time set aside anyway to talk with God. Make this appointed time a coveted time. A time to share your heart with your heavenly Father. He is waiting for you.

“Cast your cares on the Lord and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.” (Psalm 55:22)

Prayer:  Dear Lord, when we become anxious, let us remember that You are always ready to listen to our woes. Help us to go to you for peace and relief. In Jesus’ precious name we pray, Amen.
