WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN THE WORDS WON’T COME?
I am seldom at a loss for words, yet it has been 6 weeks since I last posted an article. It’s not that I haven’t had ideas or great topics to write about. I’ve written down prompts and topics, but when I attempt to pen the words, they just won’t come.
I tried to convince myself I was too busy to write; there were not enough hours in the day. And that seemed true with all I had going on: longer hours at work, a family reunion and visiting relatives, grandchildren’s ball games, and a complete kitchen remodel.
Yet, at a recent writers conference, I heard once again “if writing is important to you, you will find the time to write.”
So where does that leave me? Is writing not important me? Am I making excuses for not doing what I believe God has called me to do?
I don’t think so. I believe we all go through dry spells at various times in our lives. We know what we want to do, but for some reason we can’t move past the notion of ‘knowing what we want to do’ and put it into action.
When I read Psalms, I realize I am not alone. King David also experienced dry spells. I read his words longing for God; a thirst for the Almighty.
I lift my hands to you in prayer. I thirst for you as parched land thirsts for rain. (Psalm 143:6, NLT)
O God, you are my God; I earnestly search for you. My soul thirsts for you; my whole body longs for you in this parched and weary land where there is no water. (Psalm 63:1, NLT)
If King David could experience dry spells, then I guess I can, too, but I can’t say I like it. That is why I am seeking your help. I’m not able to do this on my own.
I am asking you to pray for me.
As I move into fall and a more consistent routine, pray God will fill my soul (and fingers) with the words He wants me to share. I desire to be obedient to His calling and trust that when my dry spell is over, He will fill me again with His messages.
Until then, your prayers would be appreciated.
“In the same way, prayer is essential in this ongoing warfare. Pray hard and long. Pray for your brothers and sisters. Keep your eyes open. Keep each other’s spirits up so that no one falls behind or drops out.” (Ephesians 6:18, MSG)
Prayer: Dear Lord, More than anything, I want to be obedient to Your calling. You have gifted me with the ability to share Your messages. Fill me with life and Your living words. May they flow from my finger tips and out to those You have already chosen to bless. In Jesus’ name I pray, Amen.
